What you will do:

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) at Worldwide Early Phase Services, Clinical Pharmacology Unit, San Antonio, Texas, will implement the Radiation Safety Program in support of pharmaceutical research medical use of radioactive materials in clinical studies. The RSO will ensure the radiation safety activities are performed in accordance with approved procedures and regulatory requirements mandated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control. The RSO will be the official liaison between Worldwide EPS and all external organizations for all matters concerning the handling and use of radioactive material and ensure that radiation exposures are kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable (“ALARA”) by exercising vigilance within the facility before, during and after the conduct of research studies involving radioactive materials.

The Radiation Safety Officer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Investigate overexposures, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, disposals, administration errors and other deviations from approved radiation safety practices and implement corrective actions.
• Review and approve written policies and procedures in support of receiving and opening packages of radioactive materials, storing of radioactive materials, maintaining inventory of radioactive materials, use of radioactive materials and overseeing emergency action if radioactive material is unaccounted for or lost.
• Ensure proper checks and calibration on survey instruments and liquids scintillation counter(s)
• Maintain copies of records and reports required by regulatory agencies, including copies of licenses, regulations and associated documents and written policies and procedures required by regulations.

What you will bring to the role

Your experience:

• As a minimum, a college degree at the Bachelor level or equivalent training and experience in physical, chemical, biological sciences, or engineering
• Training and experience commensurate with the scope of proposed activities:
  • Radiation protection principles
  • Characteristics of ionizing radiation
  • Units of radiation dose and quantities
  • Radiation detection instrumentation
  • Biological hazards of exposure to radiation (appropriate to types and forms of byproduct material to be used)
  • NRC regulatory requirements and standards
  • Hands-on use of radioactive materials
• Compliance with US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and the conditions of the license.
• Business knowledge as it relates to efficiency of processes, timely deliverables and metrics in a Life Sciences organization
• Proven track record in the RSO role in support of execution of the company’s business objectives and laboratory operations towards success
