Job Details

Oxford BioMedica is recruiting two Scientists for the newly formed ‘Vector Development’ (VD) team, as part of Oxford BioMedica’s Research Department. The department is involved in the design, development, and production of lentiviral vectors for external and internal feasibility programs; the VD team’s activities will be focussed on the characterisation and transition of promising new technologies, prior to entry into process scale validation.

The VD team will have two over-arching aims: [1] develop emerging new technologies by characterisation and addition of further knowledge/value by leveraging standard molecular/cellular biology techniques and high through-put approaches, and [2] work closely with the Vector Innovation team and the Process Research & Development group to aid the transition of new technology through the research pipeline from ‘proof-of-principle’ to ‘validation-ready’ stage points. We are seeking two highly motivated individuals to join this new team.

The successful candidate will be involved in:

  • Project focussed work utilising a variety of techniques
  • Cross-group activities within Platform Research; transitioning novel technologies from concept/proof-of-principle to ‘validation-ready’ activities at greater production scales.
  • Generating genetic variants
  • Focussed screening approaches
  • Help set-up characterisation pipelines

Key Tasks

  • Performing standard molecular biology techniques, including: cloning, (q)PCR, SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting, in vitro reporter assays, etc
  • Performing cell culture and viral vector production at small-to-mid scales (up to 0.5L bioreactors) in adherent and suspension modes
  • Planning Design-of-Experiment (DoE) approaches and implementation at high(er) through-put scales using (semi-)automative equipment
  • Keep excellent experiment/data records
  • Support other members of both the VD team and wider Research Department as required

Required Skills/Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Recent PhD degree in a relevant Biological Science subject; candidates with a Masters degree and/or substantial experience in the Bioscience industry will be considered.
  • Relevant lab technical experience (as detailed above)
  • Demonstrable excellent lab-based skills
  • Demonstrable ability to work well in a team
  • Ability to demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience in basic virology/vectorology will be advantageous
  • Knowledge/experience of biotechnology Upstream process development
  • Good intuition & problem solving skills

Company

Oxford Biomedica is a quality and innovation-led viral vector CDMO that enables its clients to deliver life-changing therapies to patients around the world. One of the original pioneers in cell and gene therapy, Oxford Biomedica has more than 25 years of experience in viral vectors, the driving force behind the majority of gene therapies.

Cell and gene therapy is the treatment of disease by the delivery of therapeutic genetic material (DNA or RNA), into a patient’s cells. One highly effective approach to delivering genetic information is to re-engineer existing viruses to be safe delivery vehicles (vectors) to insert the genetic material into patients’ cells. This can be achieved either by directly administering the vector to the patient (often referred to as in vivo gene therapy), or by first introducing the genetic material to cells or tissue outside of the body, before administering the cells or tissue into the patient (often referred to as ex vivo gene therapy or gene-modified cell therapy).

Oxford Biomedica collaborates with some of the world's most innovative pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, providing viral vector development and manufacturing expertise in lentivirus, adeno-associated virus (AAV) and adenoviral vectors. Oxford Biomedica's world-class capabilities span from early-stage development to commercialisation. These capabilities are supported by robust quality-assurance systems, analytical methods and depth of regulatory expertise.
