FREELANCE: Scientist – Computational Genetics
Major Pharmaceutical – 12 month rolling contract
UK – South East
James Carrera at Umbilical Life is engaged with a major pharmaceutical client to source a Computational Genetics Scientist responsible for the implementation of a PheWAS solution to provide translational insight to de-risk projects globally.

Responsibilities:
You will work, in support of global projects to internalise and integrate prioritised external data resources, creating and implementing a Phenome (PheWAS) resource as well as developing;
- Key functionality and analytical approaches e.g. SNP-to-gene mapping, visualization of PheWAS results
- internal processes and pipelines to run GWAS studies in support of PheWAS analysis in a cloud computing environment
- Innovative analytical approaches to add additional value e.g. pathway-level burden tests, improved case ascertainment
- Run GWAS and PheWAS analyses and support interpretation
- Monitoring of developments in the external landscape (including but not limited to emerging data sources, analytical approaches, consortia, representative bodies etc.) and supporting decision making for which to pursue.
Educated to a minimum of MSc, you will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in devising, implementing and running genetic projects, with direct experience of GWAS and PheWAS, preferably within a Pharma environment, as well as;
- generating, analysing and using genetic data generated through multiple platforms, including next generation sequencing (NGS) and associated analytical approaches.
- Direct experience of implementing and running PheWAS and GWAS analyses
- Good knowledge of statistics, with specific experience in, and application of statistical genetics.
- Advanced computational skills: proficiency in using R, python, bash and experience of working in a cloud environment
- DESIRABLE: ML / AL approaches, genetics in drug discovery, pathway enrichment,functional module detection, causal reasoning or CWL
