Group Leader - Fermentation
Our client's class-leading platform enables precise and large-scale identification of gut bacteria associated with health or disease, enabling the design of novel medicines and biomarkers based on live bacteria. In just two years, the company has established itself as an industry leader, having won four awards and recently signed a $534m strategic multi-year deal with a US based biotech to discover novel biomarkers, targets and medicines in inflammatory bowel disease. The company has a pipeline of live bacterial products for C. difficile, ulcerative colitis and cancer which will be progressed to the clinic.
Our client is now seeking a driven, organised and proactive individual to lead the Fermentation group in the Preclinical Development Team. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic scientist to play a key role in building a young biotech company and to contribute to the development of a new class of medicines.

The first programmes are in C. difficile infection, currently in preclinical development, and in ulcerative colitis. The successful candidate will be responsible for in-house fermentation of multiple anaerobic gut bacteria that comprise the medicine, characterising and optimising their growth and providing support for upstream and downstream method development and optimisation.
The major areas of responsibility are:
Leading a small team, develop fermentation processes to produce live bacterial therapeutics comprising multiple bacterial strains
Performing anaerobic fermentation of bacteria from microtiter plates to small fermenters
Maintaining an awareness of latest technologies and equipment for incorporation into company labs
Optimising media for growth of physiologically diverse bacteria
Ensuring detailed records of experiments are kept, suitable for supporting regulatory filings.
