Medical Communications Director with a Medical Writing background Belgium

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

• Establish and continuously develop the Scientific Communications function, proactively working with all functions to ensure Scientific Communications is integral to all communication activities and engages all stakeholders

• Continuously develop and compile knowledge in therapeutic areas and act as a medical resource for the company working cross-functionally and with external vendors

• Lead scientific communications activities for approved and non-approved indications and ensure alignment with objectives

• Lead the scientific and medical communication team and activities, and development of scientific communication platforms, working closely with medical affairs, clinical development, scientists, corporate communication and other stakeholders to develop and execute medical communication plans, publication plans and medical education plans

• Ensure publication plans support product and indication objectives, maximise data dissemination at global, regional and local level, including developing abstracts, posters, oral presentations, case reports and review articles

• Develop and implement medical education plans, including symposia, healthcare professional programs and other scientific activities that communicate important information to the medical and scientific community

• Build and coordinate internal and external medical writing capabilities

• Develop and implement medical information processes to ensure timely responses to internal and external stakeholders, consolidation of questions, development of standard responses and insights sharing

• Build and maintain an knowledge repository, including publication library, ensuring contribution and utilization by cross-functional colleagues

• Develop high-quality scientific content for use by Medical Affairs and other functions, including slide decks, ensuring all functions have access to relevant information

• Support Medical Affairs and Commercial colleagues in content and speaker development and preparation of events

• Liaise with external authors, investigators and thought leaders on abstracts, posters, oral presentations, manuscripts and slide decks

• Provide strategic insights into regional and local key opinion leader development activities

• Establish collaborative and positive working relationships with key stakeholders internally (product teams, clinical teams, material review committee) and externally (e.g., opinion leaders, patient advocacy groups, professional societies)

• Ensure all outputs are high quality, impactful, accurate, fair, balanced and supported by data

• Develop required SOPs, ensure all activities are in line with global, regional and local laws and guidance, including all developed content are appropriately reviewed and approved

• Plan, direct, and efficiently manage Scientific Communications budget

• Manage all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects

• Identify and screen appropriate vendors/medical communications agency, solicit and evaluate proposals, manage selected vendors and maintain productive working relationships.

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Able to work closely with and align multiple stakeholders, to develop and implement communication platforms and plans

• Able to lead the Scientific Communications function, building processes and managing staff, thriving as part of a team and when working independently

• Broad experience in publication planning and execution, preparing abstracts, posters, slides, manuscripts, developing content for educational programs, and working closely with KOLs and authors

• Demonstrated ability to select and efficiently manage vendors

• Previous responsibility for planning and managing budget across several projects

• Strong knowledge of current good publication practices and guidelines (e.g. GPP2, ICMJE)

• Proficiency with computer programs such as MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel, as well as internet databases such as PubMed

• Able to develop good breadth of knowledge in multiple therapy areas

• Ability to write / review / edit scientific articles, posters and abstracts

• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

• Advanced scientific degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD)

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in pharmaceutical communications or at a medical communications agency, working across multiple projects, managing budget and vendors

• Proven track record in leading a Scientific Communications function and team in planning, developing and implementing communication strategies to ensure successful product development and commercialization.

• Experience in neurology, hematology, autoimmune conditions and/or rare diseases is an advantage.
