Our client, a ground-breaking Biopharmaceutical company based in Cambridge, are seeking a driven, organised and proactive individual to to join as an Assistant Research Scientist within their Microbiology team. This position will focus on building the client's reference genome and metagenome platforms. The successful candidate will have substantial work experience as a research assistant in a genomics laboratory, and extensive experience of genomics techniques including; NGS library preparation and DNA sequencing. Reporting to the Head of Microbiology, the successful candidate will work with colleagues in building the companys key genomics resources

Key duties will include:

Preparation of samples for NGS sequencing
Maintenance of electronic records
Accurate and timely record keeping
Genomic DNA extraction
Metagenomic DNA extraction
Isolation of gut bacteria

Candidate Specifications:

Essential requirements for this post include:

A degree in a Biological Sciences subject, or equivalent relevant research experience
Experience as a research assistant in a genomics laboratory
Hands-on NGS library preparation experience
Extensive experience of core molecular biology and genomics techniques including nucleic acid extraction and PCR

Accurate record keeping with great attention to detail
Proven ability to follow protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
A high level of motivation and desire to learn. Willingness to contribute flexibly to a new company as required, to help it succeed
Proactivity in solving problems and responding enthusiastically to challenges
Excellent organisational skills and work ethic. A demonstrable ability to manage numerous priorities simultaneously and to meet agreed deadlines
Strong team player, with an ability to work independently and deliver projects to timescale and budget
Proficient use of Microsoft office suite programs, including Excel and Powerpoint
A high level of English language competency, including excellent written and oral communication skills
Desirable requirements for this post include:
An understanding of microbial biology, genetics, gastrointestinal microbiota and sequencing technologies
Experience of microbial culturing
Familiarity with handling perishable, human derived materials
