The opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Scientist with demonstrated experience leading bioassay and in vitro screening assay development for therapeutic applications. You are teamwork focused with the ability to mentor colleagues, managing and executing testing programs utilizing Cell and Molecular Biology techniques to support recombinant and gene therapy product development activities. You will provide scientific expertise to ensure studies are well thought out and have clear, measurable benefits. As a Senior Scientist, you will independently design assays, perform wet lab work, and manage your own time for successful outcomes.

The role:

Provide leadership, technical guidance and contribute to team activities which could involve:
  • The development and delivery of appropriately compliant bioassays to support recombinant and gene therapy product development activities.
  • Perform routine assays in support of process development activities.
  • Function effectively as core team member on multiple concurrent projects and leads small projects and establishes work processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities through direct reports, project leadership and mentoring. May be responsible for the supervision of a small team of junior scientists
  • Evaluate novel cell biology analytical technologies, and proactively identify development and improvement opportunities for new and current methods. Additionally, troubleshoot methods as required.
  • Writing scientific protocols and reports, including but not limited, for regulatory submissions.
  • Support the development and execution of strategies, plans, processes and methods to enable product and process development.
  • Use a data driven approach to progress development deliverables.
  • Present results at internal and external meetings.
  • Maintain high-level awareness of key scientific/technical strategies and innovative technical developments in your areas of expertise (e.g. bioassays, immunophenotyping, cell and gene therapy).
  • Work closely with other functional teams within the global network, including providing technical expertise in support of process development groups.
  • Implement and support quality systems within Bioanalytical sciences, and ensure department compliance with all GSP, GMP, OGTR and PC2 standards, as appropriate.


Technical Knowledge
  • Establish and perform high quality, state-of-the-art in vitro assays involving techniques such as flow cytometry (cell phenotyping and receptor binding/occupancy), cell-based bioassays (activation, apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, cytotoxicity, etc), and ELISA/MSD.
  • Cell culture expertise and troubleshooting including cell lines, primary and stem cells.
  • Previous experience with utilising Design of Experiments (DoE) and automation to expedite assay design, facilitate efficient assay delivery, and conduct where appropriate.
  • Provide expert scientific advice to group / project team members in bioassays, and cell and gene therapy technologies.
  • Contribute to an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk-taking within the program/project team members.

Your experience:
  • Postgraduate degree (preferably PhD, MSc or equivalent degree), in biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, genetics or a related field, and / or laboratory experience in biopharmaceuticals or in an academic environment.
  • Requires in-depth conceptual and practical expertise in the development of cell-based bioassays and immunophenotyping.
  • Extensive experience in working with cell culture and flow cytometry required.
  • Proactively owns and effectively drives assigned tasks to completion in a complex matrix environment.
  • Ability to develop and present solutions to complex and strategic issues.
  • Skilled in Quality by Design principles including statistical experimental design.
  • Knowledge of development strategy and ability to establish and adhere to project timelines.
  • Ability to lead and contribute in a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team environment.
