THE POSITION

We are a central histopathology team within the Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma Discovery Research organization. Our mission is to support the therapeutic areas and disease indications with readouts from microscopy images at our major research site in Biberach.

Leading a lab dedicated to microscopy and image analysis, you will operate state-of-the-art microscopes and develop and apply computer vision approaches to analyze histological samples. This creative and versatile position allows you to work in an interdisciplinary environment on a wide range of highly relevant research questions enabling drug discovery.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In your new role you will lead the laboratory of Biomedical AI in Discovery Research Germany - your lab works closely with the labs of Molecular Pathology, Histopathology and Viral Vectors.
  • As Principal Scientist you will be responsible for the image analysis of histopathological samples and development of new computer vision approaches to address histopathology related questions and tasks from all research departments at our major research site.
  • As team member in global research project teams, you will closely collaborate with colleagues from our research departments and with external partners.
  • You will be responsible to establish and develop new computer vision approaches to analyze histological samples to support a global research organization.
  • You will operate, maintain, and trouble shoot state-of-the-art microscopes and automated slide scanners in a histopathology team.
  • In addition, you will be responsible for the development of a new python-based platform of deep learning approaches to analyze histological slides.
  • By automating lab-workflows you will help to provide analyses in an increasingly efficient manner.
  • Publishing and presenting your results and methods in peer reviewed journals and on relevant conferences is also part of your new role.



Requirements


  • Doctoral degree in biophysics, physics, computer science, biomedical sciences, or a related field with several years of microscopy expertise (in depth understanding of technology including advanced methods - verified by publications)
  • Proven leadership skills either as project leader or as disciplinary lead in line functions
  • In-depth understanding of life science and biological questions
  • Several years of programming expertise in a professional environment (e.g. Python)
  • Practical experience in deep learning applied to image analysis (state-of-the-art frameworks such as Tensorflow or Pytorch with experience in image analysis software and algorithms, such as Halo, scikit-image, open-cv)
  • Data science / bioinformatics data analysis know-how (several years of practical experience with state-of-the-art frameworks such as scikit-learn and / or R)
  • Goal oriented personality with good interpersonal skills, team orientation and good communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to experts from other fields
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken), German is a plus
