Job Summary

Senior Director: Technical Services

Following the retirement of our esteemed colleague, Colin Reed, after 15 years dedicated service we are now looking for Senior Director of Technical Services to join our Senior Leadership Team. This role will be responsible for providing overall operational and scientific leadership to the in vivo Technical Services, Pathology Laboratory, Toxicology Operational Support and Dispensary Groups here at Charles River Laboratories Edinburgh.

Object of Job

  • To be responsible to the General Manager for the operational performance and success of Technical Operations
  • To provide scientific and process support to the groups to ensure a high level of service.
  • To participate in the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), which will be responsible for all operations and development of Safety Assessment, Edinburgh.
  • To participate in global teams as required to represent Edinburgh


  • The role encompassess responsibility for Animal Welfare; Project Management and Planning; Information Management, Marketing and Client Engagement; Budgetary and P & L Accountability; and Quality and Process Improvement. This is a sizeable team and woud ideally suit an experienced people manager with strong leadership capabilities from within a Life Sciences, Manufacturing or Engineering organisation who is used to working with highly collaborative manner in a global matrix structure.

    Charles River is committed to helping our partners expedite their preclinical drug development with exceptional safety assessment services, state-of-the-art facilities and expert regulatory guidance. From individual specialty toxicology and IND enabling studies to tailored packages and total laboratory support, our deeply experienced team can design and execute programs that anticipate challenges and avoid roadblocks for a smooth, efficient journey to market. Each year approximately 120 investigational new drug (IND) programs are conducted in our Safety Assessment facilities.

      Here in Scotland, based at our site in Tranent, East Lothian, we offer a complete array of Safety Assessment services from complete IND-enabling programs to stand-alone preclinical studies, our preclinical CRO services provide a full range of in vivo and in vitro testing evaluations and regulatory support for the safety assessment of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and animal health products as well as chemicalsagrochemicals, and biocides. Our scientific and regulatory staff develop and execute individual preclinical studies or customized programs to ensure that drug efficacy and safety assessments are conducted in the most efficient manner.
