Tasks & responsibilities


As Head of Computational Biology, you will have the following accountabilities:
  • Lead a large diverse Computational Biology team and contribute to Boehringer’s research in a range of common complex disease at our discovery research site in Germany.
  • Accountable for representing Computational Biology Germany as part of the Global leadership team in Global Computational Biology & Digital Sciences (gCBDS).
  • Provide leadership & strategic insight by effectively applying bioinformatics or ML based methodological approaches to multi-omics data (genomics, single cell transcriptomics/proteomics) in the pre-clinical drug discovery pipeline.
  • Partnering with Discovery Research Therapeutic Area Heads to prioritize the portfolio of Computational Biology activities/areas of focus. You will ensure that these are embedded within the larger gCBDS strategy.
  • Accountable for deploying and managing resources with a strong emphasis on further developing a dynamic growing team. Further develop your engagement in research strategy through participation in senior leadership committees.
  • Maintain & grow collaborations, prioritizing portfolio impact and addressing key department needs (e.g., gaps in data landscape, specific computational methods or use of contract research organizations).
  • Ownership and full accountabilities in developing your team (including hiring, onboarding, training and development).



Requirements


  • Postgraduate degree (PhD / Postdoc) in one of the following; genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, system biology research, mathematics, statistics, or a related field
  • Long-term experience in the pharmaceutical industry (preferred), biotechnology (including start-up) or leading position in academia / center of excellence
  • Solid understanding of spectrum of common complex disease. Beneficial to have experience in one or more of the following; Precision Psychiatry, NASH/Obesity/Retinopathies, Respiratory, or (Cancer) Immunology
  • Broad experience and knowledge in Computational Biology Research and Development with focus on translational and applied computational methods to impact new discoveries
  • International and interdisciplinary knowledge/skills addressing discovery research computational biology and data science initiatives
  • Several years’ experience and established track record in managing teams, including leading leaders
