Medical Science Liaison – Rare Neurodegenerative Diseases

Purpose of the role

The successful candidate will be a field-based medical expert with the purpose of advancing patient care and informing company medical strategies throughout the drug life cycle through scientific exchange with healthcare professionals (HCPs), key opinion leaders (KOLS), and advocacy organizations. The incumbent will meet the scientific needs of the medical community by responding to unsolicited inquiries and facilitating scientific interactions with healthcare professionals and the medical community through the provision of disease state and product information. This includes developing and maintaining “peer to peer” scientific relationships with KOLs in health care, academia, and advocacy organizations. This individual will also contribute to the overall success of the Medical Affairs organization through involvement in internal initiatives aligned to medical objectives and in shaping processes and policies as organizational needs grow and evolve. Understanding of the relevant compliance framework for field medical activities, entrepreneurial drive to help the organization succeed, and passion for science and patients are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop scientific relationships with KOLs within a defined geography to support our client's clinical program; provide credible, and fair-balanced information about client's research activities and product development
  • Provide clinical trial support to identify potential enrollment barriers, resolve issues with clinical sites, and participate in investigator meetings, as appropriate; liaise with R&D, Medical Affairs, and Clinical Operations teams
  • Present protocol, interim data, enrollment updates, and other information pertinent to sites, HCPs, and patient advocacy groups
  • Exchange medical information with and educate the medical community on scientific issues, trends, ideas, and practices related to patient care and present insights to internal cross-functional teams
  • Develop and maintain a high degree of therapeutic area, disease state, and product expertise
  • Appropriately document interactions and insights and act in accordance with company policies and guidelines and local regulatory laws

Qualifications

  • An advanced doctoral degree (MD, PHD, Pharm D) is preferred
  • 3+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience including experience as a medical science liaison in a global biotech or pharma company and experience in the rare disease and/or neuroscience therapeutic area
  • Pre-commercial experience or having worked with pipeline compounds in clinical development stage
  • Understanding of European markets; direct experience in at least one or more of the major EU4 (Germany, France, Italy, Spain) markets or the UK required
  • Highly motivated and capable of comprehending complex scientific/medical data and disseminating across diverse medical audiences
  • Expertise in presenting scientific data, clinical protocol information, trial enrollment updates, and other information to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Comprehensive understanding of laws, regulations, codes, standards, and guidelines regarding pharmaceutical industry practices related to medical liaison activities.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently; take initiative and complete tasks to deadlines
  • Comfortable with working in an international and agile environment
  • Comfortable interacting with cross-functional clinical development and clinical operations teams on local and global level
  • Willingness to travel up to 70%
  • Fluency in English
