Role: Senior Software Engineer

Location: This role is 100% remote, and can be based anywhere in the UK, Ireland or Western Europe

ICON plc is a world-leading healthcare intelligence and clinical research organisation. From molecule to medicine, we advance clinical research providing outsourced services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device and government and public health organisations.

With our patients at the centre of all that we do, we help to accelerate the development of drugs and devices that save lives and improve quality of life.

Our people are our greatest strength, are at the core of our culture, and the driving force behind our success. ICON people have a mission to succeed and a passion that ensures what we do, we do well.

The role:

ICON’s Language Services group is looking for a senior full-stack PHP developer to join our team.

This is an opportunity to join the existing software development team within Language Services.

Our Language Services team is part of our Commercialization and Outcomes group, and is a global team providing translation of clinical trial related materials for both internal and external clients.

The Language Services group consists of teams with varied responsibilities, managing projects and liaising with our clients and freelance translators.

The software development team develops and maintains a suite of applications for use by our staff, customers, and suppliers, covering areas such as project management, customer requests, supplier invoicing, and integration with other tools used by the business.

All of our team are development generalists, and we work on a mixture of new projects and legacy applications. We have a strong focus on automated testing and code quality.

Most of our codebase is the usual mix of PHP, Javascript/Typescript, HTML, and CSS, and our main database is MySQL, but we encourage innovation within the team: we have worked with Elastic Search, Scala, C# .NET, and Java at various points.

Experience:
  • At least five years’ experience working in web development in a professional environment, with a focus on PHP
  • Demonstrable knowledge of design patterns and building code that adheres to clean code/SOLID principles.
  • A strong focus and interest on code quality and testing.
  • Excellent written & spoken English
  • Experience in all of the following areas:
    • PHP
    • Javascript
    • Testing including Test-Driven Design (TDD)
    • Web technologies such as HTTP, APIs, HTML, AJAX, CSS, etc.
    • Relational databases including MySQL
    • Git version control

  • Knowledge of the following would be beneficial but is not essential: CakePHP, Laravel, VueJS, Devops
  • Ability to work on a wide variety of tasks across a number of disciplines including programming, architecture, performance tuning, building developer tools, system administration.
  • Experience of mentoring and/or line-managing more junior developers.

What you’d get:
  • Full-time remote working
  • Flexible working hours: quality and consistency of output are more important to us than clocking in at 9am and out at 5pm.
  • Work on long-term bespoke software projects. You’ll have a major input into the design and architecture of all of Language Services’ software projects.
  • Have the opportunity to have a say in the technical direction of the Language Services group.
  • The chance to attend relevant industry conferences and workshops.
