Our client, a Melbourne based biotechnology company, has developed a unique world leading platform technology that enables site specific drug delivery. Their technology involves the development of patented polymeric prodrugs that can be engineered into various product forms. The company now seeks to build on its capabilities to continue their transition from R&D to clinical development.
The role
Reporting to the Head, Polymer Materials, the successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring early-career staff, problem-solving, experimental design, the conduct of experimental studies, and data analysis. Specifically, the successful applicant will be responsible for the laboratory scale manufacture and study of pharmaceutical products derived from our client's polymeric prodrug technology, as well as assessing the performance characteristics of such products and polymer systems, including characterisation of the polymeric prodrug, performance of the pharmaceutical products derived from the polymeric prodrug and degradation of the associated polymer backbone.
- Contribute to the design of polymeric prodrug systems.
- Lead the development and production of novel monomers, polymeric prodrugs and pharmaceutical products, specifically ocular implants.
- Design, plan and conduct polymer synthesis using different step-growth techniques (polyurethane synthesis, click chemistry). Purify, formulate and process polymeric prodrugs.
- Develop processes for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products from the drug-polymer conjugate API.
- Analysis of drug-polymer conjugates via a large range of techniques (GPC, NMR, MALDI-TOF, FTIR, DSC, etc)
- Prepare specifications for monomers, drug-polymer conjugate material and ocular implant products, including design of experiments to determine appropriate specification limits.
- Ensure the effective functioning of our client's research team.
- Write scientific reports, SOPs, Master Batch Records, research reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.
- PhD degree in polymer chemistry
- Outstanding knowledge of polymer chemistry and proven capability to synthesise bespoke polymers.
- Well-developed scientific method with an ability to propose hypotheses, design experiments and analyse data to address key scientific questions.
- Proven ability to lead R&D projects and to mentor co-workers.
- Strong experience with characterisation techniques to assess the composition and physical properties of polymers (1H NMR, GPC, MALDI TOF, DSC, microscopy, viscometry, etc.).
- Proven problem-solving skills and methodology.
- Excellent communication, time management, organisation, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
- Experience with polymer processing (e.g. casting, extrusion, mould injection, etc.).
- Experience with working in a GMP environment and adhering to a quality system.
