THE JOB

We are looking for a Clinic Laboratory Technician to join our Clinic department in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales where you will assist the Clinic Sample Coordinator with the day to day running of the Separating Laboratory within the Clinical Pharmacology Unit (CPU), upkeeping all relevant study documentation (i.e. Logbooks, Shipment Logs etc.) and maintaining sufficient stock levels within the clinical department.

You will be reporting to the Clinical Operations Coordinator and you will work closely with all study leads (i.e. Project Manager, Study Officer/Deputy etc.) and other members of the clinical team (i.e. Training Officer, Quality Control Officer) to ensure study deliverables are met and maintained to the highest standard.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Undertake the handling and processing of biological samples in the Sample Preparation Room and ensure that biological samples are correctly labelled, stored, and shipped to the appropriate laboratory for analysis.
  • Ensure that sample logbooks are maintained and up to date, and completed to GCP standards.
  • Ensure that fridges and freezers are validated and that the relevant logbooks are maintained and kept up to date.
  • Assess and order stock/consumables in a timely manner to ensure the smooth running of studies.
  • Assist the Clinic Sample Coordinator and Training Officer with the training of clinic staff in all Preparation Room procedures.
  • Keep up to date with any changes in GCP or current working practices and ensure training records are kept up to date
  • Enter study data on various computerised databases as required and keep up to date with procedure updates and training in using these systems.
  • Attend regular training sessions in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Essential:
  • 2 A-Levels/Level 3 Diploma, including a Life Science or equivalent
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills with the ability to think logically and solve problems
  • Proficient people skills: to enable positive interactions with colleagues, volunteers/patients and sponsors where required
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to continuously produce work of a high-quality standard
  • Competent computer skills
  • English language - fluent, written and spoken
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work through change

Desirable:
  • Laboratory Technician qualification or equivalent
  • Previous experience working in a busy laboratory setting
  • Experience with shipping and customs procedures and documentation
  • Proficient laboratory instrument maintenance
  • Experience in working independently and as part of a large team
  • Ability to coach and mentor others
  • Basic Life Support training/ILS qualification
