Medical Affairs Project Manager; Permanent, full-time (Cambridge or home-based) UK.

 

Here in the ICON GSS team, we are in an established partnership with a primary multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company to supply a full-time, permanent UK-based Project Manager to provide leadership and manage project delivery within the Medical Affairs team.

Of particular interest are candidates with a strong scientific background, a good general understanding of the Pharmaceutical Industry and at least 2 years’ experience in a functional project manager role within the Clinical Research Industry. The successful applicant should be a fast-learner and comfortable operating autonomously and have project management experience gained in a clinical research environment.

We are looking for a clear, strong communicator with the required energy, drive and soft-skills to influence and direct a team of Coordinators, and the confidence to interact appropriately with senior management and external stakeholders. 

You will be joining existing ICON staff already deployed on the program.

Job Description detail – Medical Affairs Project Manager

 

We are currently searching for a candidate who can drive strategic planning and execution of the Oncology Business Unit (OBU) projects and accountabilities for Medical Affairs organization.  This includes interface at a global level with cross-functional teams such as Medical Excellence, Medical Evidence, Research & Development, and Global Marketing.  The role would include project oversight and management, overarching budget management, change management, and coordination with other medical teams and Project Managers.  The ideal candidate for this position would report directly to the Head of Business Planning & Operations for OBU Medical but would work closely with the franchise head and indication teams.  The position will preferably be based in Cambridge, UK (1-2 days a week) but fully remote candidates will also be considered.    

 

The ideal candidate will be expected to work in a highly effective way with other project and medical leaders to develop integrated plans which can be delivered globally and across cross-functional boundaries.  The ideal candidate can demonstrate their strategic thinking, ability to work collaboratively and act decisively to support the broader goals of OBU Medical as a whole. 

 

Accountabilities/responsibilities

 

  • Supports the Franchise Head to execute the portfolio strategy from Global, including prioritization of project, programs, infrastructure / capability build etc.
  • Partners with functional leads or Medical Affairs Leads (MALs) for project oversight and budget management
  • Facilitates overall budget and resource planning across the functional groups within the franchise team including forecasting, phasing and prioritization across the business planning cycle as well as rollup into Long Range Plans (LRPs)
  • Tracks budget and project portfolio and runs routine analytics including monthly run rate, actuals versus forecast, and prioritization of portfolio
  • In alignment with the Franchise Head, is responsible for the long-range strategic planning for the franchise team including development of Medical Plans and alignment to Brand Strategy Plans
  • Act as primary support to Global Medical Team (GMT) to ensure development and execution of key critical strategic initiatives and track deliverables from the GMT as well as from representative countries that sit on the GMT, including Evidence, Confidence, and Medical Launch activities and associated budgets
  • Partner with other BP&O PMs supporting Global Medical Teams (GMTs) to ensure alignment and appropriate inclusion of support functions into Medical Plans development, evidence generation, budget forecasting, and portfolio prioritization.
  • Creates and maintains project / deliverables dashboard and develops cross-functional tactical plans, based on the strategy, to support tollgating & other business decisions for OBU Medical.
  • Interfaces with stakeholders (internal and external to OBU Medical) and positions projects for prioritization within the broader business context as part of the LRP and ABU
  • Accountable for implementation of medical standards within the group as requested from Global
  • Run meetings, provide strategic input into meeting agendas, and manage action items from those meetings.
  • Work with Global BP&O to create processes that will streamline and simplify the business

Required experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in pharmaceutical industry or similar with comprehensive understanding of the development and commercialisation of pharmaceutical products
  • Experience of successful influencing cross functionally, cross-culturally and cross-brands
  • Experience of effective working in a multi-cultural, matrixed environment
  • Experience working in a global setting, managing stakeholders within different time zones
  • Experience preparing and/or delivering presentations to executive leadership

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience in Medical Affairs strongly preferred (Global, Regional, or local) but not essential
  • Graduate level degree in sciences or business degree
  • Six Sigma Medical/Process Excellence and/or Project Management/PMP/FPX certification is a plus but not required
  • Depth of understanding of medical, scientific and/or commercial pharmaceutical marketplace of Oncology is a plus
