The Opportunity

We are seeking an Automation Engineer (Recipe Owner, FCC Lead) to join our growing Project Banksia team for the construction of our state-of-the-art Influenza cell-culture (FCC) manufacturing facility in Tullamarine (Victoria, Australia). Expected to be completed in 2026, this facility will be the only cell-based influenza vaccine manufacturing facility in the Southern Hemisphere and will also produce unique products important to Australia's public health needs such as snake and spider antivenoms.

The Role

Based mainly at Tullamarine, this 4-year fixed term role is responsible for the delivery of the Execution Systems scope required to support the implementation of Recipe Driven Execution, (RDE), in the FCC area. This includes the design and delivery of the system configuration for the Process Control System (Siemens PCS7), Manufacturing Execution System (Siemens OpsCenter), Data Historian (OSi-PI) and their integration into the various Enterprise systems (SAP, LIMS, CMMS etc).

This Lead role is responsible for the technical management of the Execution Systems scope in the FCC area from basic / detailed design, systems configuration, FAT / SAT testing, onsite commissioning and qualification through start up and facility operation for the Banksia Site. The FCC process area consists of the following main manufacturing operations;
  • Media & Buffer solution manufacture;
  • Cell Culture;
  • Harvest;
  • Initial Purification, and;
  • Final Purification.


Reporting to the Execution Systems Lead for Project Banksia, this role will ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. This role will work with the Process Engineering teams to generate the detailed user requirements for these manufacturing operations and provide technical oversight to the system integrator and automation contractors during the system configuration of the applicable systems in the Utility area.

As the FCC Lead, this role will have additional supervisory and technical responsibilities including:
  • Liaising with the Project Management team to ensure the right technical prioritization on project activities and Execution System deliverables are on schedule to support the project milestones.
  • Working closely with the System Library and Engineering Standards owner(s) to ensure the defined standards including ISA-88 and ISA-95 are followed consistently throughout the project and library modules are used as intended.


To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant Engineering field;
  • 10 years (minimum) working experience in Execution Systems/Automation system design and configuration;
  • 5 Years hands on configuration experience with Siemens PCS7 in a batch manufacturing environment.
  • Direct experience designing, building, deploying and supporting automation and execution systems in a regulated large-scale process-based manufacturing environment;
  • Demonstrated capability for technical leadership of complex DCS/PCS Automation projects with integrated MES systems from initial design / configuration through validation and start-up of the facility;
  • Excellent understanding of the process operations and engineering systems within the Pharmaceutical Industry;
  • Direct experience in implementation of ISA-88 Batch Control, and ISA-95 Control system / Enterprise System Integration standards.
  • Experience with Siemens OpsCenter MES is highly desirable.
