Oxford Biomedica’s Process R&D team consists of experienced scientists and engineers that have extensive expertise in all aspects of upstream and downstream development.  PR&D take processes from the laboratory “bench” scale and apply process expertise and engineering fundamentals for delivery to Manufacturing.

We are currently recruiting for a Director, Process Research and Development to join the team.  The purpose of this role is to lead and direct a new AAV production team within the Process Research and Development group and to be responsible for the development, optimisation and implementation of manufacturing processes suitable for the large-scale production of a variety of AAV based gene therapy vectors. The role will be to manage the effective performance of team(s) of scientists to meet requirements and to deliver both in-house and collaborative process development projects for a variety of viral vectors. A close working relationship with other groups within Process Research and Development as well as Platform Research and Manufacturing teams will be required.

 

Your responsibilities in this role would be:

  • The role will contribute to the cross-departmental development of an AAV manufacturing and development platform within Oxford Biomedica Lead and direct process development activities across upstream, downstream and analytical teams to support the manufacture of adeno-associated virus (AAV) based gene therapy vectors.
  • Accountable for the effective performance of the Process R&D Department, with tactical focus on the Department’s multiple varied complex activities and day-to-day operational management.
  • Support the development of a portfolio of gene-based therapies from early to late stage by providing expert input into project teams, directing development work, reviewing data, supporting regulatory, clinical and business development activities.
  • Identify and engage with external experts/academic groups in collaborative projects that will advance product development goals.
  • Maintain awareness of external technology and patent landscape and competitor process technology activity, and advise accordingly in order to ensure we are at the forefront of the relevant scientific fields.
  • Ensure focussed research that will benefit aspects of the product development pipeline i.e. product functionality and manufacture at GMP scale.
  • Proactively identify project risk and issues to the relevant internal stakeholders and external collaborators at an early stage.
  • Contribute to generation of new IP to secure future investments for the business.

 

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience of bio-processes for the production, purification and analytical characterisation of adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy vectors.
  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience of five or more of the following areas: gene therapy, virology, viral vectors, cell biology, pharmaceutical industry and process development of biopharmaceuticals, analytical techniques, high through-put technologies, and GxP / regulatory documentation.
  • From a deep scientific understanding be able to identify and disseminate the key advances within related scientific fields that affect current research activities.
  • Extensive understanding of the R&D activities across internal departments.
  • A good understanding of quality systems and regulatory requirements.
  • Understand the Health and Safety aspects of the work carried out in their department.
  • A strong track record in the research development/gene therapy/cell engineering/analytics/scale-up of biopharmaceuticals (Industrial experience and/or good publication record)
  • Management and leadership knowledge & experience within a fast-paced environment
  • Set individual objectives for direct reports and performs informal and formal performance reviews.
  • Strong motivator via coaching and actively promote the development and progression of team members through training and development
  • Lead cross-functional Project Teams to ensure they have the information and motivation to successfully deliver agreed projects
  • Lead quality improvements for PR&D Analytics activities, motivate and encourage a culture of continuous improvement to working practices, empower staff and encourage ownership
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior managers, internal partners/professionals to achieve business goals
  • Regularly presents the Department’s ongoing work to key stakeholders and collaborators (UK and International) utilising influencing skills to reach agreement on process development activities.
