Development Operations is here to deliver science through a wide range of specialist expertise, operational excellence and data driven innovation. These enable us to drive extensive clinical trial programmes from design to regulatory submission and approval. Providing the key connection between science and commercialisation, we deliver trials to the highest standards of quality, efficiency and ethics to thousands of patients globally.

In the role as Study Management Director (SMD) you will lead global study management resources and directly manage their line managers. You will be responsible for talent management, leadership and strategy development, cascading and execution for study management organisation, including delivery of annual strategic priorities. To that effect you will coordinate the work of the SM leadership team. You will be accountable for SM contribution, oversight and leadership of strategic and high priority non-drug projects and other initiatives, driving operational excellence, owning process improvements and implementation, optimizing strategy and delivery and building positive relationships internally and externally. You will be accountable for overall effective functioning of the SM Leadership Team (LT) and for the related budget across all locations and work with the leadership teams to shape the organisation's future through the implementation of global strategies. Your accountabilities will also cover financial and capacity management within dedicated portfolio. You will drive the portfolio delivery through oversight of study performance and escalation, applying a full understanding of internal and external environment and empowering teams to proactively manage portfolio risk and opportunity. Additionally, the SMD will take a senior leadership role for hub related initiatives and across locations.

Typical accountabilities:

As a Line Manager (30%)

  • Develop, coach, motivate and inspire employees to achieve their fullest potential
  • Talent management and leadership development of study management resources
  • Ensure performance development management and personal development of employees
  • Ensure compliance with ethics, policies and standard procedures
  • Co-located and virtual line management of Associate Directors Study Management

SM Late Department strategy, goals and priorities (20%)

  • Work with the SM Late LT team to shape, communicate and embed the key strategic priorities for the function and identify near-term and annual priorities for the team
  • Manage overall process for setting of annual functional departmental goals and scorecard(s), including tracking and regular updates, to ensure delivery through the year
  • Accountable for SM contribution, oversight and, if applicable, leadership of strategic and high
  • priority non-drug projects and other initiatives
  • Ensure effective functioning of the Study Management (SM) Leadership Team (LT).
  • Leads business and financial planning for the function
  • Identifies external industry trends and capabilities and novel technologies and evolutionary processes to meet the specific challenges in SM Late and across functions
  • Manages the FTE and capacity process for SM Late and core member of DevOps capacity management team (led by BPO)

Portfolio and Programme Management (20%)

  • Occasionally lead, as appropriate, improvement and cross-functional initiatives related to project/portfolio management, governance, analytics, strategic planning processes, SM Late technology/systems, organization design, information management and enterprise ways of working / productivity improvement
  • Prepare briefing materials and research analysis as required to support head of function for key business decisions, meetings and projects
  • Actively monitors the performance of the portfolio (e.g. KPIs) and implements continuous improvement practices to deliver business goals
  • Ensures correct skills and capabilities and appropriate capacityboth internally and externally, are in place to ensure portfolio delivery
  • Serves as senior stakeholder for issue escalation and empowers and enables teams and leaders to identify solutions and supports their resolution

Engagement & Communications (30%)

  • Work with the SM Late LT team to shape, communicate and embed the key strategic priorities for the function and identify near-term and annual priorities for the team
  • In collaboration with the communication lead(s), develops an effective communication plan to drive the understanding of Biopharma strategy within the function and externally with key stakeholders
  • Drive strong engagement in SM through the development and implementation of a strong communications strategy and delivery of employee events across hubs
  • Support the leadership team in preparation of town hall materials and functional reviews

Requirements:

  • University degree MSc or equivalent preferably in life science
  • At least 5 years' experience in global study management or equivalent
  • At least 10 years Pharmaceutical Industry experience in Clinical Development and/or Study Operations - comprehensive knowledge of clinical and pharmaceutical drug development process with at least 10 years' experience in this area
  • Proven line management and leadership expertise, with at least 3 year experience as a line manager
  • Demonstrated development of others, identifying and providing opportunities to improve the capabilities of other people
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Risk and crisis management experience; Manages change with a positive approach to the challenges of change for self, team and the business. Sees change as an opportunity to improve performance and add value to the business
