About the Role:

We are looking for an outstanding engineer to help us to shape the future of automation and machine engineering within Abcam manufacturing.

As a Senior Engineer at the company you will solve complex design and engineering problems in a cross-functional team environment. This provides an exciting and unique opportunity to drive progress in all aspects of manufacturing quality, efficiency and scalability.

Reporting to the Director of Global Technical Operations, you will be working in a small multi-disciplinary team on real-world machinery/instrumentation design and integration projects. This will encompass a diverse range of interesting assignments enabling you to develop creative technical solutions to our current manufacturing challenges whilst helping the company achieve its wider mission.

The work will be broad in scope covering initial brief/feasibility to prototyping and final delivery, allowing you to develop deep industry and application knowledge. Previous experience in automation or equipment integration projects is required and a true passion for innovation and engineering is a must.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Provide automation-related technical expertise and knowledge of engineering fundamentals to Abcam manufacturing groups.
  • Help the team shape a standardised approach to automation strategy and equipment design that will be used throughout Abcam.
  • Identify development opportunities and help drive continuous improvement in manufacturing processes, systems, hardware and capacity utilisation.
  • Assist the re-design of existing processes for scalability and ease of automaton.
  • Partner with Abcam R&D groups to manage in-house proof-of-concept experiments/projects that will inform subsequent equipment design studies.
  • Help conceptualise new ideas for complex manufacturing systems by contributing knowledge of automation, mechanism design and robotics.
  • Engage and manage laboratory equipment vendors and other related suppliers on instrument / hardware integration projects.
  • Evaluate complex proposals from 3rd party suppliers of bespoke bioprocessing equipment considering cost, risk and ability to integrate with existing systems.
  • Lead and participate in design review meetings and conduct failure mode analysis.
  • Research and provide input on sensor selection and control system design.
  • Prepare design drawings, specifications, financial models and other associated documentation as required.
  • Build positive, trusted and effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.

About you

Skills Required:
  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Production Engineering or equivalent)
  • At least 5 years of commercial experience in manufacturing automation, machine design or product development
  • Proven track record of working in multi-disciplinary teams in a complex technical project-based environment
  • Strong knowledge of commercial-off-the-shelf automation components
  • Understanding of quality control and risk management
  • Product design, machine design and CAD experience
  • Awareness of rapid prototyping and fabrication processes
  • Highly organised, able to work to deadlines and prioritise effectively
  • Equally comfortable working independently or as part of a team with outstanding attention to detail

Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of fluidics system design and laboratory liquid handling machines
  • Ability to assess component CNC or 3D printing manufacturability
  • Capability in scripting languages
  • Knowledge of serial communication protocols and COM port control
  • Understanding of simple electronics design
  • Prior experience with PLC installation and programming
  • Familiarity with bar code readers and vision systems
