Senior Scientist USP Process Development

Purpose of the role
The purpose of the role is to be a senior level contributor in upstream process (USP) development. The Senior Scientist would have her/his areas of specialization that are company-wide well recognized.

Place in the Organization
The Process Development (PD) department at Amsterdam, consists of several (senior) scientists and (senior) technicians lead by a principal scientist, is a part of Product Development. PD Amsterdam is responsible for development of innovative process technologies, process development for clinical and commercial manufacturing of AAV-based gene therapy products.

Key result areas (major duties, accountabilities, and responsibilities)
  • Performs development of innovative process technologies in the area of upstream processing or animal cell culture for manufacturing of AAV.
  • Designs / outlines (masterminds) experimental plan. Writes / reviews / approves plans, process descriptions and experimental protocols.
  • Line (people) manager for 0-3 (senior) technicians. Mentors and trains (senior) technicians and other Scientists.
  • Coordinates / supervises the experiments in the lab and when necessary performs experiments her / himself.
  • Analyzes / reviews experimental results / data, writes / reviews reports (g. experimental report, overall development report).
  • Acts as key consultant for higher management on scientific matters on her / his area of expertise. Proactively proposes new strategies and out-of-the-box approaches.
  • Continuously updates her / himself with state-of-the-art technologies in the field and strives for higher scientific excellence.
  • Presents results in conferences, writes journal articles and scientific content of patent applications.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Holds a PhD (in Bioprocess Engineering or Upstream Processing or Animal Cell culture or similar).
  • Possesses minimum 4 years of post-PhD work experience.
  • Possesses extensive hands-on experience on animal cell culture in different bioreactor systems at different scales for production of complex biologics, e.g. gene therapy, viral vaccines, or therapeutic proteins.
  • Highly skillful in theory and practical aspects of bioreactors, animal cell culture processes and virus production.
  • Experienced in multiple areas from the followings: Process development, manufacturing process design, design of experiments (DoE), scale up / down, technology transfer, adeno associated virus (AAV), GMP manufacturing, pharmaceutical quality management systems, common technical documents (CTD).
  • Outstanding scientific writing skill demonstrated by publications and reports.
  • Fluent in English.
