Head of Histology & Imaging

Purpose of the role
The ideal candidate should have a deep knowledge of histology and imaging analysis of both liver and CNS directed gene therapy. The successful candidate will have proven leadership abilities with strong written and oral communication skills. We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled leader with a strong background in histology to join the team.

Place in the Organization
The Histology and Imaging Group is focusing on (a) processing, sectioning, and staining of animal tissue samples, as well as (b) microscopy and image analysis to support research and development programs. The group is based in Amsterdam.

Key result areas (major duties, accountabilities, and responsibilities)
  • Lead and provide strong mentorship for a team of in-house researchers to support histology, microscopy, and imaging analyses.
  • Select, design, and execute histopathological assessments and scoring of different tissues in support of research and development programs.
  • Accountable for various tissue staining and evaluation of different proteins using various chromogenic and antibody-based approaches such as immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and in-situ hybridization.
  • Responsible for a team focused on troubleshooting and optimizing RNA in-situ hybridization, tissue staining while automating tissue processing and staining procedures.
  • Leading a team working on imaging by using slide scanner, confocal, and fluorescence microscopy and image analysis by running different image analysis software
  • Teach junior team members procedures and analyses as described above.
  • Work with CROs and manage outsourced studies.
  • Preparing, presenting, and reviewing scientific presentations for internal/external use
  • Organizing a robust communication line to all other relevant function of the organization
  • Organizes appropriate documentation e.g., study plans/reports and facilitates writing of regulatory documents.
Qualifications & Skills
  • PhD in (molecular) biology, neuroscience, or related field with at least 10 years of histology experience in preferably a pharmaceutical (gene therapy) industry setting.
  • Proven scientific experience, preferably trained within the field of histology in combination with imaging, microscopy, molecular biology, neurobiology, virology.
  • Deep experience in histology, microscopy, and image analysis
  • Extensive experience in immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence staining and microscopic techniques.
  • Significant experience leading, developing, and coaching a team of scientists and technicians.
  • Experience managing outsourced studies performed at CRO’s.
  • Proven ability to create histology sections of regulatory documents.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities to meet project deadlines.
  • Experience with working in a fast changing and demanding environment, willing and able to act a pro-actively.
