As a global, world-leading Life Sciences Contract Research Organisation, Covance provides a dedicated and fully comprehensive laboratory testing and drug development service to the pharmaceutical industry. At our site in Shardlow, Derbyshire we are looking to recruit a Team Leader within the Physical Chemi cal and Analytical Support team.

This role is to lead a team of scientists analysing analytical samples in support of our Aquatic Ecotoxicology department. You will also undertake the role of Study Director/Analytical Principal Investigator on assigned studies, in compliance with SOPs, GLPs, and regulatory agency guidelines.

Job Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in recruitment where required and continued staff development, performance management and staff development
  • Prepare and undergo formal appraisals at appropriate intervals with team and self
  • Maintain an awareness of enquiry status and liaise with Head of Department regarding availability within team to undertake new studies.
  • M aintain an awareness of departmental financial performance and the impact on the contribution to company performance
  • Contribute to departmental meetings and provide feedback to departmental achievements, challenges and disappointments
  • Oversee the planning of the workload and monitor analytical results generated within agreed time frames
  • Ensure all work generated by the team complies with regulatory requirements, high quality data is generated and results are issued in a timely manner
  • Continuous improvement - development of own skills, knowledge and understanding for personal improvement whilst identifying team and department process improvement to enhance efficiency and quality
  • Direct method development and take the lead in resolving analytical issues
  • Review and approve analytical methods ensuring they are fit for purpose and scientifically valid and prepare accurate reports
  • Prepare or review analytical Study Plans ensuring they satisfy the regulatory requirements and scientific objectives of the study
  • Develop, maintain and present training programmes, both for appropriate scientific and regulatory issues and the Company values
  • Ensure GLP compliance of systems and procedures
  • Achieving robust financials - taking ownership for and delivery of revenue generating tasks to ensure right first time. Minimising costs by eliminating waste (consumables & rework)
  • Act as a key contact for internal and external customers, ensuring that customers receive prompt and appropriate responses to enquiries and are regularly updated with study progress
  • Represents the Company through scientific and external seminars
  • Provide expert advice on analytical results to colleagues and clients, maintaining awareness of current trends, issues and developments
Education/Qualifications:
  • Scientific degree
Experience:
  • Experience of managing teams of people
  • Significant experience in a relevant scientific discipline with practical knowledge of HPLC, GC, MS and MSMS
  • Significant experience of working in a CRO or similar environment
  • Demontrates clear ownership and leadership skills, grows and harnesses strengths of team members
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt style to the situation
  • Provides feedback, builds relationships and works to successfully improve quality standards
  • Works collaboratively within the team and across the wider Company
  • Motivates the team to deliver exceptional customer service
  • Is able to make decisions and adapt to changing priorities
