Scientist: Upstream Process Sciences
UCB – Inspired by patients. Driven by science.
Help us transform patients’ lives.

About UCB

At UCB, we put our heart, soul and skills into making a difference for people living with severe diseases. We look to transform patients’ lives by pushing the boundaries of what is possible. With us, our talent makes the most of who they are, unlocking innovation and setting new standards for patients.

Everything we do starts with a simple question: “How will this make a difference to the lives of people living with severe diseases?” And to find the answers, we connect globally with patients and their families living with the physical and social burdens of severe disease. These connections give us new perspectives, drive our innovation, and offer a hope for a new generation of therapies that will help to transform lives.

To strengthen our Technical and Supply Operations Group, we are looking to fill the position of: Scientist: Upstream Process Sciences.

What We Offer
An opportunity to:

  • Work in a team environment, collaborating with various process scientists (upstream and downstream) and analytical scientists.
  • Utilize your knowledge in biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, statistics, molecular biology, analytical methods and cellular metabolism to aid in process development and optimization of upstream processes producing protein therapeutics for early and late stage projects.
  • Contribute to scientific development and technology development projects requiring innovative research, to improve USP and primary recovery processes and understanding.

About the Role
You will be responsible for:

  • Performing upstream process development experiments for the development of new manufacturing processes and the improvement of existing processes at lab and pilot scale; including all upstream and primary recovery activities as well as associated purification and analytical methods.
  • Trending and analysing laboratory data. Presenting results to your line manager, USP team and at internal meetings.
  • Determining process limits as part of process understanding, characterisation and validation studies.
  • Providing traceable records of lab work, experimental design and report writing.
  • Providing technical expertise in upstream processing for internal customers.
  • Providing upstream processing support to internal manufacturing, CMO and technology transfer teams as appropriate.
  • Managing placement students and/or associate scientists as appropriate.
  • Supporting team compliance with all quality management systems, including reviewing, writing and updating internal procedures and documents (e.g. Lab procedures, SOPs, templates).

About You
You should have:

  • Extensive experience in cell culture process development.
  • Experience working with bioreactors and harvest processes across scales (cell culture processes).
  • Strong Lab skills with proven troubleshooting capability (the role will be lab based).
  • Excellent scientific method – experimental design, analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Knowledge/experience in tech transfer/scaling up of processes.
  • Experience in a process development environment.
  • Sound understanding of physiology, metabolism and molecular biology of microbial and/or mammalian cells.

UCB is continuously working to advance science and embrace new knowledge. We are leveraging scientific advances and skills in areas such as genetics, biomarkers and human biology. Patients inspire us to bring them value through cutting-edge science, innovative drugs, and practical solutions – so that they and their carers can get on with their lives.

Our strategy

We recognise that radical changes are taking place in the eco-system of care and that we need to evolve accordingly to deliver on our vision. The key element of our evolution is to focus on the delivery of increased patient value.

There is no such thing as an “average patient”. We want to use all the tools, channels and scientific advances at our disposal to develop a better understanding of the various expressions of a disease and embed the real needs of specific patient populations in our science and innovation process.

That is why we support patient groups who provide valuable services to patient communities and understand what matters to people living with severe diseases.

We believe in partnership. Our scientists collaborate with leading researchers from academia and industry to advance science and deliver the solutions patients need. Our open approach to innovation equips us to meet today’s biggest healthcare challenges.
