The Opportunity

CSL has an opportunity available for a Senior Scientist to join our In vivo Pharmacology Group based at Bio21 Institute. The In vivo Pharmacology Group is responsible for evaluating and understanding the mechanism of action of protein, cell and gene therapy-based therapeutics in animal models of disease.

You will support the suite of Transplant projects within In vivo Pharmacology and will report to the Lead Transplant Scientist within the In vivo Pharmacology group.

You will be responsible for evaluating, establishing, developing, and supervising animal models of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) and solid organ transplantation (SOT) for the conduct of proof-of-concept and proof-of-mechanism studies. You will work with a small team of research scientists and within an extended team across different areas within CSL, as well as be responsible for developing and managing relevant external collaborations.

Your main responsibilities include:
  • Assess and identify animal models of HSCT and SOT relevant for proof-of-mechanism and proof-of-concept studies;
  • Establish animal models of HSCT and relevant assays for evaluation of drug mechanism of action and efficacy;
  • Supervise and conduct proof-of-concept in vivo studies to generate data packages to support the development of selected drug candidates;
  • Supervise and conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments to understand the mechanism of action of selected drug candidates;
  • Contribute to the identification of external experts in transplant-related fields for the establishment of new collaborative opportunities;
  • Oversee and manage relevant external collaborations in HSCT and SOT for preclinical studies;
  • Contribute to the development of novel and competitive approaches to improve HSCT and SoT outcomes;
  • Ensure laboratory practices and animal ethics submissions meet required deadlines and comply with all relevant guidelines, standards and regulations;
  • Supervise and train junior staff in the above activities;

Your experience:

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Transplantation Biology/Immunology, HSCT, Immune tolerance and Immune modulation, Cell & Gene therapies) and have more than five years post-doctoral experience working with animal models that support these areas of research;
  • Expertise and skills related to the establishment and use of humanised mouse models e.g. NSG mouse humanisation, xenogenic-GvHD, allograft rejection;
  • Experience developing, breeding, maintaining and using mouse strains;
  • Experience writing, submitting, and reporting on animal ethics applications;
  • Experience with in vitro assays to understand the mechanism of action of novel drugs for the treatment of transplant disease indications;
  • Experience with or a strong working knowledge of platform technologies such as IVIS in vivo imaging, lentiviral or CRISPR gene modification, RNAseq, and/or proteomics;
  • Ability in assay design, data analysis, and statistical analyses;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
