Who Should You Connect With on LinkedIn?

Who Should You Connect With on LinkedInAs we’ve already discussed, LinkedIn shouldn’t be about the number of connections you have, but rather the quality of your connections and the value they bring to your network. This means that when you’re trying to grow your network, you should be staying clear of the scattergun approach and instead be reaching out to people who you either already have a shared experience with, or who you feel you could develop a valuable professional relationship with.

Here are some examples of who you could connect with:

  • Previous or current colleagues
  • People you went to school or university with
  • People you meet at networking events
  • Recruiters
  • Close friends and family
  • People in the same LinkedIn group as you
  • Professionals working in the same industry as you or in a similar role
  • People working in the industry you’d like to be in, or in a role similar to one you’re hoping to find

Remember when you’re reaching out to people to mention what your common ground is, and to not only focus on what you hope to gain from their connection, but to also tell them what they could gain from accepting you into their network.
