Top Ten Pharma Companies in Germany

Germany is home to one of the largest pharma markets in the world. Here are ten of the top pharmaceutical companies in the country:

Boehringer Ingelheim

A global, research-based pharmaceutical company that works towards improving both human and animal health, specifically on diseases which currently have no successful treatment option. Boehringer Ingelheim contributes around 21% to the GDP contribution of the entire pharma industry in Germany. With locations in Ingelheim, Biberach and Dortmund, they also conduct 45% of research and development ventures in the country.

Novartis

A leading global pharmaceutical company with a specialist focus on developing breakthrough therapies in areas of great unmet medical need. Novartis has 12 offices located in Germany.

Janssen

One of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical companies and part of the leading global healthcare company Johnson & Johnson. In 2019 alone, 4.6 million people in Germany were treated with Janssen drugs.

GSK

A global health research company dedicated to helping people across the world lead longer, healthier, and more active lives. GSK employs over 3,400 people across 5 German locations in Heidelberg, Marburg, Berlin, Dresden, and Munich.

Bristol-Myers Squibb

A global biopharmaceutical company that researches, develops and delivers innovative drugs for patients with serious illnesses. As of 2020, Bristol-Myers Squibb has around 1,200 employees in Germany.

Roche

A global pioneer in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics focused on advancing science with the aim of improving people’s lives. Roche Germany is the second-largest country representative within the Roche Group worldwide, with around 17,200 employees working across 4 locations in Penzberg, Grenzach-Wyhlen, Ludwigsburg and Mannheim.

Bayer

For its Pharmaceutical division, Bayer researches, develops, and markets innovative drugs in areas such as cardiology, oncology and haematology. 14 of Bayer’s 19 sites are based in Germany, with sites in locations including Frankfurt, Berlin, and Darmstadt. 

Novo Nordisk

Novo Nordisk works to meet the medical needs of people living with serious chronic diseases by providing innovative medicines and delivery systems. They produce 50% of the world’s insulin supply and provide more than 32 million people with diabetes care products. 470 of its employees are based in Germany.

Sanofi

A global biopharmaceutical company focused on human health, with more than 9,000 employees working across 3 locations in Germany. In 2020, Sanofi achieved sales of over 4.5 billion Euros in Germany where it is constantly developing.  

Pfizer

One of the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers. Pfizer Germany is headquartered in Berlin and has two further locations in Karlsruhe and Freiburg, with around 2,500 employees working across the three sites.
