Top Ten Biotech Companies in Germany

Germany’s biotechnology industry is booming, with research by Germany Trade & Invest showing that the biotech workforce in the country has passed the 50,000 mark, with employees working across 660 dedicated biotech companies as of 2019.

In this article, we’ve rounded up some of the top biotech companies in Germany to highlight the strength of the industry in the country…

BioNTech

Founded in 2008 in Mainz, Germany, BioNTech is a global biotechnology company that specialises in individualised immunotherapies, particularly in the field of oncology. The company has expanded its facilities since 2008 and now has sites in Mainz, Idar-Oberstein, Berlin, Martinsried and Neuried, as well as in the US, powered by over 1,000 employees.

Evotec

A drug discovery alliance and development partnership company focused on rapidly progressing innovative product approaches with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, academics, patient advocacy groups and venture capitalists. Evotec is headquartered in Hamburg and has three other sites in Germany in Cologne, Göttingen and Munich.

Amgen

Amgen is a leading global independent biotechnology company with around 24,000 employees in almost 100 countries. In Germany, around 850 employees work across two locations, including in Munich where Amgen specialises in the development of innovative cancer therapies.  

QIAGEN

QIAGEN is the leading global provider of Sample to Insight solutions that enable customers to gain valuable molecular insights from samples containing the building blocks of life. QIAGEN provides solutions to more than 500,000 customers globally and employs approximately 5,700 people in over 35 locations worldwide, including in its DIALUNOX division in Germany.

CureVac

CureVac is pioneering the development of a new class of drugs based on the messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Tübingen, Germany, CureVac has over 600 employees working across sites in Tübingen, Frankfurt and the US.

Rentschler Biopharma

Founded in 1927, Rentschler Biopharma is a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) that focuses on developing and manufacturing biopharmaceuticals. The company is headquartered in Laupheim, Germany, and also has sites in the UK and US.

Biogen

Founded in 1978 as one of the first global biotech companies, Biogen conducts scientific research that aims to defeat serious neurological diseases. Biogen has had a branch in Germany since 1997, which is now based in Munich-Bogenhausen. The site has over 400 employees who work on developments in multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease and psoriasis treatments.

Leica Biosystems

Leica Biosystems is a cancer diagnostics company and leading provider of workflow solutions headquartered in Wetzlar, Germany. The company focuses on driving innovations by connecting people across radiology, pathology, surgery and oncology.

Miltenyi Biotec

Miltenyi Biotec focuses on the design, development, manufacture, and integration of products that empower the advancement of biomedical research and enable cell and gene therapy. The company is headquartered in Bergisch Gladbach where it also has a GMP facility for cell processing and manufacturing. In Germany, Miltenyi Biotec also has facilities in Teterow, Bielefeld, Göttingen and Radolfzell.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals

A global biotech that invests in scientific innovation to create transformative medicines for people with serious diseases. Vertex Pharmaceuticals has research and development facilities and business offices around the world including across the US, UK, Australia and Europe, including a site based in Munich, Germany.
