Personalising Your LinkedIn Requests

Rather than simply clicking ‘connect’ on every profile you see on LinkedIn with the aim of growing a large network, use the ‘connect’ option as a place to start conversations with the people who could add value to your network. Having lots of connections will ultimately be useless if you aren’t taking the time to get to know them and making your name one that they will remember.

When sending out connection requests, make it obvious to the person you’re reaching out to why you’re connecting with them by outlining the common ground that you have. This could be anything from attending the same school or university to working within the same industry. You should also make it clear why you’re a good connection to have. For example, maybe you use your profile to share unique insights on topics you think match their interests, or maybe you share lots of news and developments from the industry they’re in. Whatever it is, make sure it’s clear in that first interaction, and make sure that you’ve had a good look at their profile to make sure that the common ground is there.

Remember that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to your LinkedIn network and that engaging with your connections is the best way to open yourself up to new opportunities on the platform and to really expand your network in terms of value.
