  • Quality control and assurance processes
  • Technology, systems, and software utilised for data and trial management

  • Competitors and industry landscape
  • Any unique or innovative approaches to clinical research
  • Future plans, upcoming trials, or expansion initiatives

Of course, you won’t be expected to know every little thing about the company but try to focus on the things that you could confidently discuss in an interview and things that you can use to help demonstrate your knowledge and experience.

Thoroughly Research the Role

It goes without saying that to succeed in your CRA job interview, you need to have a solid understanding of what the role entails. But how do you achieve that beyond reading the job description?

One of the most effective ways of learning more about a role is by connecting with those already performing it. Whether you sign up for a mentorship scheme or arrange informational interviews with those in the field, the insights you can gain from industry professionals can be crucial in setting you apart.

Current CRAs may be able to share more information about the unique challenges they face in their role, as well as the responsibilities they carry out that aren’t necessarily included in their job description. You can learn more about the skills needed to succeed and how they are used in practice, as well as how CRAs work within an organisation.

Demonstrate Your Attention to Detail

CRAs are responsible for meticulous documentation and data management during clinical trials. Showcase your attention to detail by discussing your experience in maintaining accurate study records, ensuring data integrity, and adhering to strict documentation standards. Illustrate how you prioritise accuracy and precision in your work to guarantee the validity of trial data.

Attention to detail is something that recruiters and hiring managers will likely be assessing from your very first interaction with them.   • Mirror the tone set by the person arranging your interview, for example, by using a sign-off that’s on a similar level of formality as theirs
  • Assess your online presence, and ensure any public profiles communicate who you are in a positive light
  • Confirm the details of your interview, and don’t be afraid to ask follow-up questions for clarification on certain details

During your job interview:

  • Demonstrate active listening
  • Ensure your answers to questions are structured, for example by following the STAR method
  • Use appropriate language and vocabulary to convey your ideas effectively, and avoid using excessive jargon
  • Ask relevant and thoughtful questions to show your engagement with the conversation
  • Seek clarification if you are unsure about a question or instruction rather than trying to blag your way through

And after your job interview:

  • Send a prompt and personalised thank-you email to the person/people who interviewed you. Express your appreciation for their time, reiterate your interest in the role, and highlight key points discussed

The demand for digital skills held by CRAs is increasing, along with the acceleration of digitisation and remote working. Employers in 2024 and beyond will be seeking candidates with advanced data analytics skills, such as machine learning or big data analytics, which are now being mentioned more and more frequently in job postings.

Familiarise yourself with the work the company – as well as its competitors – are doing with new technologies such as AI and machine learning, and demonstrate an awareness of the direction the industry is moving in. Try and uncover the tools and platforms the company uses and consider taking a short training course on any that you haven’t used to showcase your willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies. When talking about your previous experience, try and highlight any tools and platforms you’ve used either in your previous roles or education, outlining how those allowed you to complete work efficiently.
